ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced campaigner to lead our Māori engagement work, which will primarily focus on building relationships with whānau, hapū and iwi to support stronger environmental protection, with a focus on ocean protection in Aotearoa and the South Pacific.

This is a senior campaigner role which will be responsible for strategies to support building relationships between Greenpeace and te Ao Māori to campaign to protect the environment.

You will:

  • Work closely alongside Greenpeace campaigners to deliver strategies to protect the environment, with particular focus on the ocean

  • Build relationships with whānau, hapū, and iwi, activists, and politicians

  • Use a range of tactics, including community events, media, communications, policy work and more

  • Maximise opportunities for successful campaigning in a dynamic world.


ABOUT YOU

Your background might be in community engagement or activism, Mātauranga Māori, science and research, or political campaigning. Regardless of where you have worked, you will have experience in building strong relationships around common causes, and working within te Ao Māori. You will have an understanding of power and the different approaches to social change.

You will be experienced with decision-making, prioritisation and creative problem solving. You will have a good knowledge of environmental issues and the intersections between indigenous rights and the environment. You will have experience in communicating issues clearly and compellingly.


SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • At least 5 years’ experience working in strategic relationship management (particularly with Māori communities), environmental protection/management/governance or similar

  • Experience of building trusting relationships with a range of stakeholders, especially with whānau, hapū and iwi

  • Experience working in teams to deliver shared goals

  • Resilient, comfortable with confrontation and passionate about defending nature
    Strong public speaking and clear, succinct written communication skills

Job requirements

This role is based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) and is a full time (37.5 hours per week) permanent position.
You must be a New Zealand citizen or resident, or hold an existing New Zealand work permit to be considered for this role.
